India's Mars Orbiter Mission: The frugal innovation : India's Mars mission is a marvel not only in space science
but also in project management
The Financial Express | 29 Oct 2014
On September 23, 2014 (Tuesday-Mangal in Hindi) night, India’s Mars Orbiter
Mission (Mangalyaan) successfully reached the position from where it was to
enter Martian orbit. It had travelled 10 months, covering a distance of 420
million miles (661 million km). Hitherto Mangalyaan was on the set course. The
challenge, now, was to insert it into the Red Planet’s orbit. This required
accurate calculation of distance and the determination of the exact time and
the point at which to insert the spacecraft into the orbit of Mars (gravity
about 38% of Earth’s).
